How to Get Motivated
I’m sure you’ve heard of the phrase – “paralysis by analysis” right? Where there is too much of something going on – and ultimately nothing happens and you remain stagnant. Standing in the same place isn’t any fun – so it takes some type of motivation to make something happen.
If this is you, even if there are times when you might be tired, or exhausted, and the last thing you want to do is expend energy – here are some things you can try on for size that I do…
Get Physical.
Get your blood pumping and provoke your body into energizing itself. If I’m really stagnant and just can’t get going for whatever reason (there are many!), I’ll lace ‘em up and go for a run. Sometimes I’ll go shoot around and play some basketball, but the point is that I get my blood flowing. By the time I finish and shower – I feel refreshed, energized, and refocused.
Ask Yourself.
If you lack motivation, then I could make the assumption that you don’t really want to do whatever it is you need to be motivated to do. Now, I’m not referring to you being a procrastinator, but you may lack the motivation to do something you have committed, mentally, verbally, contractually, etc. to doing – this is when you can as yourself some questions. When you don’t want to do something – you can fall into the trap of mentally avoiding relative thoughts. Just ask yourself…
- Why am I avoiding?
- Does this warrant my time?
- Does this get me closer to a goal, or something I want?
You get the idea. Pick your brain a little bit.
Be Positive.
Don’t be negative. I tend to get the most out of positive thinking in the mornings. As I’m getting myself going or driving to work – I think of reasons why today is and can be a great day. I play out the day in my head and just maintain a positive attitude in general. Your thinking patterns and thoughts are going to drive your behavior, whether you realize it happening or not!
Get Competitive, with Yourself.
Challenging yourself is a good thing, and should be something you enjoy. Trying to get better, trying to improve – and actually making it happen in the short term – gives you natural feelings of accomplishment and it induces the competitive juices in you. Pushing your limits is a good thing.
Information overload a bad thing. Simplification is always good. If you need to get motivated to get something accomplished and move forward in your life – give these a shot and see what happens. Figure out what works for you.
