Get Your Fresh Start On

Ahh, there’s nothing like the promise of a fresh start, right? We all need a fresh start from time to time – and there’s no better time than the turn of a year’s past with a new one on the immediate horizon for a fresh start. In life, staying fresh in whatever it is that you do is important and necessary for growth. So, if you’ve had a fantastic 2010 or a rotten 2010, take a minute and throw it out the window. Without even reflecting, you know what you’ve learned. The good, the bad – we all have a certain degree of both in our lives.

A small index card makes a big impact. Without much reflection, I know that 2010 wasn’t my best year in several areas of my life that I deem important. Financially, physically, etc. And that’s ok. Often times in order to go higher than ever, you have to go as low as you can go. It’s the growing pains of life that we all go through at one time or another. I have some habits that I look forward to kicking to the curb. I understand that if I want to accomplish some of the goals that I have – I need to create some new habits.

I made a short list of things I no longer want in my life and some things that I’d like to incorporate into my life. I grabbed a 3″x5″ index card and just started writing down a count of days. Beginning with one – and writing until there was no longer room on the back of the card. I ended at 166. I’ve done this in a smaller effort this past year and was pleased with the outcome. So this is a card that I will keep in my wallet – and as each day passes that I have successfully met the criteria I have developed – I highlight that day. Today is day one…

Don’t wait until January 1st. I, like most people, have historically maintained the standard “New Year’s resolution” syndrome that most people get this time of year. Lots of promise, little effort, and ultimately no results. So, I created my index card, but I am not going to start this Saturday on January 1st. I’m starting today. Putting off starting something is destined for failure – and it goes to show that you don’t truly care about it!

Go out and make your own vehicle for keeping yourself accountable. There’s always something we want to do better or change. So why don’t we do them? The why is whole other nut to crack. But what we can do is latch on to something we deem bigger than ourselves. The most enjoyable part of my day as time goes on is going to be highlighting the next number on the back of my index card.

I’ll keep you posted with some picture updates of how it’s going!
