20 Ways to Find Inspiration: #11

Written by Michael Weaver | Follow me on Twitter | Free updates via Email.

Intro: This was initially one post listing out 20 great methods or things you can use to find inspiration in your life. I have decided to expand upon each one (in no particular order!) because so often we read “how-to’s” and different things we should do in list forms – and typically no action is ever taken. I wanted to talk in more detail about how I interpret and get inspired by each one.

#11 – Get Outta The “Stuff” Mentality

This picture inspired my very first post as a blogger about six months ago. From a young age, we are inundated with marketing messages that lead us to believe we need to live a lifestyle that is geared towards acquiring stuff, more stuff, and some stuff on the side for when you get tired of your old stuff.

Ask yourself – How would life be for you if you had to throw away all your clutter, clothes, electronics, cars, shoes, computers, closet junk, etc.? I mean, you don’t really need all that stuff, do you? Will attaining more of it make you happy? The answer is no. You may experience some sort of emotional high for a short period of time, but that soon subsides and you’ll be left standing right where you were before you had the additional stuff.

Moderation is one hell of a concept – and is a word that can quickly get lost in our society. Moderating the material accumulation in our lives is important. And if you gave away all of your stuff, junk, and crap you don’t need – I think many people would feel an intense sense of liberation. As if they are free from things that they have been dragging around for years. We drag things around because we perceive them to be important, when in reality, they mean very little in the grand scheme of life.

I think it’s okay to allow a material possession, like a new car for example, to motivate you to reach some goals. With that in mind, the core message is to take some time and forget about all the stuff that your life revolves around and that can get in the way of what life is all about. Try it for a week, or maybe just for a few days. I think you’ll find other things in life that give you joy and excitement. And when you find out what those things are, you can incorporate them into your lives – in moderation of course!
