Most people have what they might call “the big picture” for their life. The culmination of your life’s actions is what you might call your big picture. Or maybe it’s “where you see yourself ending up” in life. How do we keep this big picture in perspective and within reach? Many people simply don’t know what is in store for their life – or they may not spend the mental energy to try and figure out where they truly want their life to go. Now, we are all very different people and different things make us happy, sad, inspired, angry, etc. We all have different measures and criteria when it comes to success and fulfillment. There are a few simple things YOU can do to ensure that you get closer to understanding and finding “the big picture”…

  1. Start at the End
Think about where you see yourself and what you want to see yourself doing some time down the road – 10 years, 20 years, 40 years, etc. Visualization is key. See yourself in situations that are desirable to you later in life. I like to think of it as working backwords. For example, say it is a dream of mine to become a college professor on a beautiful campus. The more I mentally put myself in that situation and actually visualize myself in that environment – it’s automatically closer to becoming reality.
  2. What Makes You Happy
Focus on the things that make you happy. Most people have jobs and other parts of life that naturally can become overwhelming and can sometimes push what you truly enjoy doing in life under the rug. It’s important to find a balance that allows you to do the things that you enjoy on a regular basis. Even if you aspire to travel and experience different cultures – find ways to satisfy that desire locally when you can’t physically be doing it. Ultimately, your big picture is your happiness – so find ways to do what makes you happy even if you feel like there is simply no time for such things.
  3. Build a Network
Building the right network of people around you can take you places you simply can’t get to by yourself. Join groups and learn about as many people as you can. When you do this, you are naturally going to be able to give in some way to others. It’s amazing how willing people are to help you and connect you with people they know personally. Not only is this helpful in business – it is very helpful in life. Focusing in on your big picture is essentially the same as making your dream become a reality – and there’s no better way to get closer to making your dream a reality than talking about it to others. You’ll gain insight and perspective that would be impossible to gain with reaching out and connecting with others.
  4. Ask, and Ask More
Ask as many questions as you need to. What do you do if you are completely lost in an area that you are not familiar with? You ask questions because you don’t know. The big picture of your life is just as simple. Ask questions, people love to answer questions. As you ask more questions, you paint a clearer picture and slowly become an expert at what you need to do to make your big picture, or dream real. Use online message boards that are full of experts. You can find a message board or forum on just about any subject you can think of. You can post your questions and get to know people with similar interests.
  5. Once a Day
Just do at least one thing a day. Even if it’s spending five minutes just thinking about some things you need to accomplish during that week. Let’s face it, we all have days where there’s just no way you’re going to get the time you need to get what you want done. Just keep it fresh in your mind and find a way to discipline and commit yourself. Doing something once per day turns into you being very persistent and proactive – so quit putting things off!!
