As people decide that they are in need of some type of life change – big or small – it’s important to understand that discipline equals achievement. But discipline isn’t easy, obviously, or else we would all be in complete control of our lives. So how do we approach these changes and tackle discipline? How do we become more disciplined? These approaches below all relate and can help you take control of what you want to accomplish and achieve.

The Art of Practice
No expert in any field was born that way. We’re not all setting out to be an expert, but we can all learn from an expert’s approach. The only way to achieve a life change is to take an expert’s approach – meaning you need a plan, you need to be passionate, and you have to practice. Every success story involves a plan, determined passion, and a pursuit that grows through constant action – or practice.

Recognize – Then Say Yes or No
I have often tried to change certain things or improve things in my life and I’ve struggled at times. Why did I struggle? I didn’t take control by being disciplined. After I realized things weren’t happening because of my behavior, I decided to be extra conscious of what decisions I was making. In this new recognition and react approach, I was able to achieve in the short-term – leading to long-term success of the ultimate goal. Many of us have broad goals of becoming successful, being more efficient, making better use of our time, losing weight, etc. We often times don’t succeed because we let things slide, losing focus. So recognize when it’s time to make a decision, and say yes or no accordingly. Let one right decision build on the last, and gain momentum for the next decision.

Give it Time
While taking the recognition and react approach, you allow time to not negatively affect your frame of mind. We often fail because the time it takes to reach a goal is daunting, it doesn’t seem attainable. In becoming disciplined – and taking one decision at a time – you rapidly notice progress and your goal seems that much more attainable. Giving it time is two-fold. Your focus on isolating decisions and making the right decision allows you to not think about how long it might take you – and simultaneously, naturally forces you to consciously spend time and focus on what you want to achieve.

Discipline is Control
It’s simple, your level of discipline defines your degree of control. So it’s critical that you understand the impact of your daily decisions. Once you master taking one decision at a time, you begin to get the ball rolling and you can feel yourself gaining more control.
