Also – here are a bunch of good clips of him talking about his past and how he got to where he is today.  There is a lot to learn from this stuff:

Walking the City

walking in new york cityAfter spending a weekend in New York City, I realized how enjoyable it is to walk everywhere or use public transportation to get around.  We use so much energy to drive everywhere we do when living in the suburbs.  I found myself thinking of the ways I can reduce how much I drive to take care of our daily activities like getting groceries, going out to eat, taking a walk, going for a run, etc.

The fact that many people who live in the suburbs drive to a particular destination to go running is something that would blow a lot of peoples’ minds in New York City – or any big city where the primary mode of transportation is either by foot or by public transport.

Yes – people actually get in their car, drive, get out, run, and drive back home.  I’ve done it before.

First of all, you should travel using your own two feet more often because it is good for your health and well-being.  It does other things that we don’t directly see or feel – like helping create cleaner air, less traffic noise, etc.  And let’s not forget, it’s a hell of a lot safer than driving!

At the end of the day, if you choose to walk instead of drive, you’re efficiently using urban space and energy.  It’s not going to cause injury (unless you are extraordinarily clumsy!) and it gives our streets vitality and increases a sense of community.  Many of our trips are much shorter than we perceive them to be.

So, WALK if you can every once in a while!

It’s a Matter of Time

it's a matter of time

Don’t you sometimes wonder why don’t accomplish the things that you want to accomplish?

Sure, you get done what you have to get done.  Whether it’s a job or some other responsibility – you’re certainly doing something to keep you “busy”.

This busyness is what keeps us from accomplishing the things that are near and dear to our hearts, things we’ve thought about doing if we “didn’t have to work”.

This isn’t a Law of Attraction kind of post.  I’m not telling you to just keep thinking it and it will happen for you.  Not quite.

I’m telling you that everything, almost everything, is possible if given the proper amount of time and focus.  You have to spend focused, thought-ridden time on your thing, whatever it may be, and you’ll get there.

Bottom line.  No two ways around it.

I’m convinced that your and my success relative to just about anything we want to do – is downright a direct function of how much time we spend on it.

After the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA title, Mark Cuban was in the eye of the public as he is the owner of the franchise.  So, knowing Cuban is a billionaire, I checked out his Wikipedia page and a few interviews on YouTube.

As I was listening to some of these interviews, I found myself thinking about all the different things going on in my life.  I then, in an instant, validated what I have been thinking all along and what Mark Cuban just told me.

You have to put in the time.  Early, late, on lunch, sleep little, etc.  Even if you are busy, you still have to do something out of the ordinary to get to where you want to go.

Time goes pretty fast, doesn’t it?

Hell yes it does!

If are trying to lose weight, your focus must be on making the right choices for an extended period of time. If you are trying to build a business, your focus must be on building the business for an extended period of time. And if things aren’t happening?  Well, you better spend some more time on it until you start seeing some changes.

It’s only a matter of time.  Take some time, and give it a legitimate chance.

How to Stay Fresh

how to stay fresh

“Instinct is untaught ability” -Alexander Bain

Do not get stagnant.  Do not sit in an idle state.

Staying fresh is important in all major areas of our life – and most certainly in the major relationships that we must maintain throughout life.  Relationships like your significant other, your family, your friends, your employer or your employees, etc.

Listen to Your Instincts

I can definitely think back to times where I had in instinctual type of reaction, but my decision or path traveled was different than what my initial instinct told me to do.  Then, obviously, I whack myself on the forehead and ask myself why I didn’t listen to myself!

Learning to trust your instincts can be hard, because we don’t always act or behave in parallel with what our instincts are telling us.  So you don’t have a track record of successes or failures, outside of your perfect hindsight.

Recently, I have been taking note of what my instincts are telling me and at the very least – recognizing it and paying attention to it.

Your instincts are unique to you, because it’s your gut feel.  It’s all you have, and it’s nothing that someone else has.  Have you ever seen a stranger and thought to yourself – check it out – that person looks just like my one friend named Brad! Then you ask your friend and say hey doesn’t THAT look like our friend Brad?? And your friend tells you that you are crazy and that you need to get your eyes checked out.  When that happens to me, I think to myself – well, the thought popped into my head for a reason!

Staying Fresh

Following your instincts is a great step towards keeping things fresh in your life.  You know when things aren’t going well.  You know when it’s time for a refresher with your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife or significant other.  You can feel it in your gut, it’s your instincts talking to you.

Same with your employer – or your relationship with your employees – you can feel it when there is a void.

It’s important that you lend attention to these messages that your gut and your instincts are telling you.  What happens when you let them linger and sit there?  Well, most likely wasted opportunity to get things on the correct track and a probably opportunity to look back in the future and say that you should have done this, or you should have done that.

Of course, to keep things fresh you have to throw a curve ball in there every once in a while.  But that’s obvious, I don’t need to tell you that.  My dog can tell me that!  If I throw the tennis ball the exact same way ten times in a row, my dog is going to get bored and no longer fetch and bring back the ball.  If I throw the tennis ball differently each time – he is going to stay excited and interested in playing because I am keeping the game fresh.

Stay fresh out there my friends.

Where Are You?

where are youShe’s in a cab.

That’s not what I mean though.  I don’t mean literally.   What I mean is that time is going so fast that we often need to check ourselves.  We are fast-approaching mid-june of the year 2011.

Yes, that’s JUNE already.

I thought we were just in March, or something.

Back to the question at hand.  And I bring this up because I just can’t believe how fast this year is going already.  I laugh when I think that in less than 90 days – I’ll be enjoying college football again and fall will be peering in the room.

Think Back to December

Think about where you are right now with how you envisioned this year going back in December of 2010.  Where are you now?  Are you on track?  Are you ahead of where you thought you’d be?  Or, maybe you could really care less and you’re not thinking about it.

I’m not great at tracking how much of this or that I am doing – working out and / or running is an example of something many people track religiously that I just wouldn’t keep up with.

It’s helpful for me if I think back to a momentous occasion that caused me to reflect on my life or think about my life with a greater sense of perspective.  That’s when you think ahead to the future because you’ve invested some energy in thinking about the immediate past – and you basically think about what’s good, what you want to change, and what’s not good that you need to change.

The Question Looms

A looming question sounds a bit ominous, but if it’s a question you don’t want to think about – then I’m guessing you aren’t living up to some standard you previously set for yourself!

I’ve found that once I begin thinking about that question, “where am I right now in regards to where I thought I wanted to be six months ago, a year ago?”  What you’ll find is refreshing.  You’re hitting the reset button in a way.  I can’t tell you how you’ll react and respond, but I get a boost of energy and excitement when I re-gain some clarity about where I want to be with my life.

In a cab or not, you can always get to thinkin’.
